The stones, meena, clasp fittings, solder and dirt come off first, so the scale reads less than the piece felt in your hand. A set you think of as 10 grams can honestly read 8.4, and you can watch each step happen. Why does the weight read less at gold buyers in Sector 18?
Because you are selling gold, and the piece in your hand is not all gold. Many sets from Sectors 15, 16, 25, 26, 27, 29, 30 and 37 are heavy with meena work, stones, lac filling and hooks. Your hand feels the whole piece. The scale should show only the metal.
Here is an example. A necklace set weighs 10 grams on a kitchen scale or in the family memory. Take off the stones, the meena and the dirt packed behind them. What is left may read 8.4 grams of gold. The missing 1.6 grams was never gold. It was only ever part of the weight of the piece.
This is the moment where most arguments start. A seller sees a smaller number than they expected and feels cheated. Most of the time nobody has cheated anyone. The two numbers measured different things.
The longer explanation is in why the weight on the buyer's scale is less than you expected. This post is about what to do at the counter.
What comes off before the gold is weighed?
Five things, in the order you will usually see them:
- Stones. We buy gold only. We do not buy stones, so they are not counted.
- Meena (enamel). The coloured coating sits on the gold. It has weight, but it is not gold.
- Clasps and fittings. Screws, springs and hooks are often a different metal. They are separated out.
- Solder. Chains and bangles that have been joined or repaired carry solder at the joints. It is not the same purity as the rest of the piece.
- Dirt and lac. Years of oil, soap and dust collect behind settings and in chain links. Hollow or filled pieces carry lac inside.
Gold in jewellery is mixed with other metals so that it is hard enough to wear. That is the purity question, and the karatmeter answers it separately. Weight and purity are two different inputs. Neither one is a guess. For the second one, read how a karatmeter reading is taken, step by step. For the parts that are not gold, see stones, meena and clasps.
How do I watch the weighing happen?
Ask for these steps, in this order. A buyer who is straight with you will agree to all of them.
- Weigh the piece whole first. Note the number. This is the figure that matches your memory.
- See the non-gold parts taken off. Ask to watch it, and to see the stones and fittings set aside.
- Weigh the gold alone. The scale should read zero before the piece goes on, and the number should be visible to you.
- Test the gold on the karatmeter. You should see the reading, not just be told it.
- Ask how the figure for the piece is worked out. Weight, purity and the rate for the day are the inputs. The figure comes from them once the piece is tested.
If you do nothing else, do step 1 and step 3. The gap between them is the whole answer to "why is it less". You can then see for yourself what was taken off.
How a tola or gram figure is read on the scale is covered in how your gold is weighed.
Should I go to Atta Market, or to a cash buyer?
Atta Market has the densest run of jewellers in Noida. Most of them take old gold as exchange against new jewellery, or deduct making charges. That is fine if you are buying a new piece. It is a different deal if you only want cash for your purana sona.
Among gold buyers, the thing to compare is not only the rate. Compare what is deducted and what you are shown. Ask each shop the same questions about the weighing steps above. Our post on exchange versus cash sets out the difference. If you want to compare quotes, take your time over it. Nothing has to happen the same day. You can also read why two shops quote different rates.
Counter or pickup, from Sector 18 and central Noida?
Both are possible. Which is right depends on what you are carrying and how you feel about carrying it.
- The counter. From Sector 18 it is about 16 km by road, about 35 to 55 minutes depending on the Sector 71 crossing. The route runs via Sector 71, Kisan Chowk and Gaur Chowk to Sector 16B. That is a map estimate, not a promise. It suits one or two pieces that fit in a pocket.
- A pickup. Pickup to Sector 18 is the same day. It is the better call when you are moving a full set from Sector 25 or 37, when a family member cannot travel, or when you simply do not want to carry heavy jewellery across the city. Ask on WhatsApp first whether the same weighing steps will happen at your door.
If the trip itself is the worry, read carrying gold safely to the counter. The Sector 18, Noida page lays out both options for your area, and the Noida page covers the other sectors.
What if the weight still looks wrong?
Do not hand over the gold yet. Say so, plainly and calmly, and ask the buyer to weigh the piece again in front of you. Then ask where the missing grams went. A real answer is specific: "these stones, these clasp parts, this solder".
You can also decline. A second quote costs you nothing, and a second quote before you sell explains how to ask for one. If the purity reading is lower than the stamp, see what happens if your gold tests lower than the stamp. Among gold buyers, the ones worth your gold are the ones who let you ask.
If you want to check the steps before you travel, call or WhatsApp 9217742656 and ask how the weighing is done. You can also read about the locality page for Noida Extension. Hindi pages are at gold bechna hai.
Questions people ask
Why does my gold weigh less than I thought at the shop? The shop weighs only the gold. Stones, meena, clasp parts, solder and dirt are taken off first. They count towards the weight in your hand, but not towards the gold.
Can a 10 gram set really read 8.4 grams? Yes. If about 1.6 grams of the set is stones, meena, fittings and dirt, the gold alone reads 8.4. Ask to see the whole-piece weight and the gold-only weight one after the other.
Can I watch the weighing at Sector 18, or at my door? Yes, ask for it. Pickup to Sector 18 is the same day, and you can call or WhatsApp 9217742656 to ask how the weighing is shown to you.
